  • SU News- At the time of the meeting, we was still awaiting news.
  • SU Application- These papers were shown to members.
  • Honest Publishing- At the session, 3 books that were sent by Honest Publishing were shown to members. One member was so interested that she has very kindly borrowed one of the titles and will provide us with feedback at the next session.
  • Admin- We discussed various matters regarding our SU application such as maybe a new time for the club to run to meet a requirement for the SU, changing the time to accommodate every one on Edge Hill's campus etc. This leads onto...
  • Fresher's Week strategy- We discussed some ideas that members very kindly contacted us with. The idea of having a stand at the Fresher's Week fair was very important, creating posters to go around campus (which is already happening), creating some flyers to hand out to people at the fair, having a 'taster' session, competitions etc. We've had some great ideas, keep them coming!
  • Book changes- Members have asked specifically if they could change Adele Parks's book that is on the list. The choices we have are:- The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova or the Orange Prize winner 'The Tiger's Wife' by Tea Obreht. We will promoting this soon on Twitter and Facebook.
  • Email Newsletter-We have set up an email newsletter so that firstly, you can get up to date news and secondly if there is a problem with sessions (for example if people cannot attend, if there are any cancellations/alterations). If you would like to be on this list, then get in contact with us!
And that's about it. If you need any information, then please email us at EHU_Bookclub@hotmail.co.uk or tweet us under EHU_bookclub or find us on Facebook under: ehu_bookclub.

A much needed update

So much as gone on with the club, we feel that we need to update you!

Firstly, we are sad to say that one of the leading founders of the Bookclub is off to pasters new to New Zealand to finish off the final year of her undergraduate degree. But she has left the following statement:-

'I would like to officially announce that I have been offered the opportunity to complete the third year of my degree in New Zealand. I'm very shocked yet happy that this has happened.
But this sadly leaves me to announce that I will be stepping down organising the club in order to take this opportunity. But do not fear! The Bookclub will still continue under the hands of an amazing co-founder who I believe will continue to make progression and progress with the bookclub. And she will do an amazing job.
I would like to thank every single person who has helped or has been involved with setting up the Bookclub and getting it into the position it is now. We've proven to people that there is a need for it and we will continue in every way we can to keep the Bookclub.'

Many thanks Emz x'

I'm sure on behalf of everyone who is involved at EHU_Bookclub would like to wish Emz the best of the luck with the degree and hopes it'll be a successful year.

Now for more news:-

  • Growth of the Twitter page and FB page- We have recieved huge responses from both pages. We would like to thank everyone for joining us or staying with us and thanks for spreading the word!
  • Posters- We have a few people interested in the posters and many thanks to everyone who expressed an interest. Hopefully, we will have some posters by the next session to look at!
  • English and History department- Over the next coming months, we will be contacting the tutors in the English and History department to spread the word about the Bookclub. And also in Septmeber, the new Freshers will be here and hopefully the Bookclub will attract some new members and help people feel comfortable about being an new student at EHU.
  • SU- We have contacted the SU on campus to see if they can help in way promote the club. We're just awaiting a reply!
  • Next Session- The next session is on the 20th May at 5pm, meeting at BookEnds in the Library. The book we will be discussing is 'One Day' By David Nicholls. This book surprised many critics last year and also this year and was awarded an National Galaxy Book Award. Leading the session will be Sarah who will provide questions and some material to help the discussion and we will be posting our findings on the blog for people to see and track the development of the club.
We hope to see you at our next session. If you have any questions about how to join the Bookclub, you can find us on FB under: ehu_bookclub, on Twitter: EHU_Bookclub or email us EHU_Bookclub@hotmail.co.uk. Everyone is welcome and there may be cake!!

News Update

Well, we hope you had a fab Easter and didn't eat too many chocolate eggs! But to update you lovely people on matters surrounding the bookclub:-
  • Spreading of the club- The FB page is gathering pace and the Twitter page is maintaining momentum. I cannot thank people enough for spreading the word of the Bookclub enough. Especially Sarah and Jonesy who are doing a great job. And we would like to thank existing and new members for being part of the club.
  • Email from the Library- The Library are following us on Twitter! And we've received an email from them wishing us luck and we need to let them know how many people are turning up each session. So a week and a half before the next session, we will be asking for confirmation numbers!
  • Booklist- We are getting great comments about the vast amount of variety we have on our list which is great
  • Posters- We are looking for someone or a few peeps to produce some posters to strengthen the bookclub further that will encourage more people to enjoy what we have set up now. Can you help?
  • Group member sessions- As discussed on the 8th April, we allowed the group members a chance to put their favourite book on our list. But throughout the list, we are giving members the opportunity to lead their own session, provide reading questions/extra guidance notes etc.
  • Next Session- This will be taking place on the 20th May at 5pm at Bookends at EHU's Ormskirk campus. Everyone is welcome. We will be reading 'One Day' by David Nicholls which will be lead by Emma or Jonesy. You can get it online/shops etc. But the best deal we have seen is in ASDA where its on the 2 for £7 offer or its £4 on its own. Bargain.
Also, an announcement is going to be made on Thursday regarding the future of the club. At this stage, we don't know what this is and the future of the club will NOT be affected by this. So expect another blog post on Thursday pm and alerts from Twitter from Thursday pm.
