Update 5

Hiya everyone! Hope you are well and enjoying the great British summer (well lack of it). Just thought we would update you on every bookclub-related...

  • Twitter/FB page- At the moment, we seem to have a growth with the Twitter page but the Facebook page is declining slightly. But thanks for following or joining and spread the word. The Twitter page is linked to the Facebook page so you guys don't miss any news that we announce.  And especially on Facebook, we have created events pages for at least 3 books on the list. But we will look into this..
  • SU News- The bookclub can officially announce that today we have been ACCEPTED by the SU! This is absolutely fantastic news and we are officially recongised. I would like to thank everyone who has supported the club through this process and we hope your as happy as we are. Which leads me to another newsflash...
  • Fresher's Week Stand- This was discussed at the last meeting and we understood that it was crucial to our growth. We can announce that we will be having a stand this year! Which is amazing. We are looking for people to help us, so if you're interested, then let us know but an message will be going out shortly.
  • Fresher's Week- We DO need to have another meeting regarding this. In terms of what we can do with and without the stand. This meeting will have to be within the next three weeks to give the club time to prepare. However, if you have any ideas, then let us know!
  • Honest Publishing- They have been in contact again and are very interested in hearing our thoughts on their work!
  • Reading Group Website- As you may have show in a previous post, we are now on the Reading Groups website. We are really. They provide help to bookclubs, promote them and some very good offers. Have a look http://www.readinggroups.org/find/location/lancashire/ormskirk/5457/. And from this, we have had some positive emails from people interested in joining which is fantastic!
  • Admin- We need to have a meeting soon regarding this as its important to make sure we are now meeting the SU's standards and everyone is happy with this which leads onto another subject...
  • Members who cannot make meetings- We understand that some people may not be able to make meetings in the summer due to circumstances beyond our or even their own control. However, we are looking at maybe creating a forum/chatroom for all members to meet and communicate with each other but also when meetings are taking place, have the opportunity to not miss anything when the meeting is taking place. We are also looking into Skype also. But when we have our meeting about admin and Fresher's Week this will be discussed with ALL members.
  • Book changes- Over the next week, we will actively asking all members on Twitter and Facebook which book they would like to see Adele Parks replaced with. We have posted a poll on our Facebook page and also on our blog as well. The choices are The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and finally the Orange Prize winner The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht. Please make sure you vote by 5pm on  Friday the 27th July. We will collect votes from the Facebook poll and our blog poll and announce the winner that evening. Get voting!!!!!
  • Email Newsletter- Let us know if you want to be on the list!
  • Brighton Rock Session- We have posted an event page on Facebook this week informing all members that the session on Brighton Rock will be on the 3rd August starting at 1:30pm and finishing at 3pm, meeting at Bookends as usual. However, we have also suggested that if you don't fancy doing Brighton Rock this month, then picking a book from our booklist instead. For the second option, you have until the end of next week to decide, so PLEASE let us know!
And that's about it. If you need any information, then please email us at EHU_Bookclub@hotmail.co.uk or tweet us under EHU_Bookclub or find us on Facebook under: ehu_bookclub

Hopefully see you on the 3rd August

Last Session of the club... (28th June 2010)

Hi all! Hope you are well. Sorry for lateness of this post, we have been actively doing some admin work for the group.

Here's what happened at the last session:-

  • Twitter/FB page- Seems to gathering more support which is always great. And thanks to new members for joining and following us. Hope to see you at a session soon.
  • SU News- At the time of the meeting, we was still awaiting news.
  • SU Application- These papers were shown to members.
  • Honest Publishing- At the session, 3 books that were sent by Honest Publishing were shown to members. One member was so interested that she has very kindly borrowed one of the titles and will provide us with feedback at the next session.
  • Admin- We discussed various matters regarding our SU application such as maybe a new time for the club to run to meet a requirement for the SU, changing the time to accommodate every one on Edge Hill's campus etc. This leads onto...
  • Fresher's Week strategy- We discussed some ideas that members very kindly contacted us with. The idea of having a stand at the Fresher's Week fair was very important, creating posters to go around campus (which is already happening), creating some flyers to hand out to people at the fair, having a 'taster' session, competitions etc. We've had some great ideas, keep them coming!
  • Book changes- Members have asked specifically if they could change Adele Parks's book that is on the list. The choices we have are:- The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova or the Orange Prize winner 'The Tiger's Wife' by Tea Obreht. We will promoting this soon on Twitter and Facebook.
  • Email Newsletter-We have set up an email newsletter so that firstly, you can get up to date news and secondly if there is a problem with sessions (for example if people cannot attend, if there are any cancellations/alterations). If you would like to be on this list, then get in contact with us!
And that's about it. If you need any information, then please email us at EHU_Bookclub@hotmail.co.uk or tweet us under EHU_bookclub or find us on Facebook under: ehu_bookclub.
