  1. Facebook page- is growing rapidly. Thanks and welcome to existing and new members!
  2. Leaflets and posters for the Fresher's Fair- Absolutely amazing. A big thanks to Jen, Ross and Liz for all their help in making the leaflets amazing!
  3. SU Page- We have a page on the SU site! :D. It will be edited with our information on soon. Keep watching the page develop.
  4. Fresher's Fair- Was an amazing success! We got 99 people signed up to join hopefully! We've just sent out a massive email to all of the 99 people with more information as sadly towards the end of the day we ran out of leaflets! A big, big, big thank you to Sia and David for all their help, wouldn't have been sucessful without you at the fair! Also, there are pictures of us from Fresher's Fair on Facebook if you wanna see!
  5. Postponment of Dorian Grey- Due to us not realising how soon we would be doing the session, we have decided instead to have a social event in Liverpool within the 1st or 2nd week of October! If you would like to attend, let us know ASAP for numbers and we can give you prices etc. Stay tuned on Twitter and the Facebook page for more announcements.
  6. SU funding- Sarah when she meets with Tina will discuss if we can buy the booklist in bulk quanities in order for members to buy the booklist very cheaply. We will inform you of any developments!
  7. Change in Leadership- As you will know, Sarah due to her situation has been told to find a replacement for the Bookclub. At the moment, Sarah is awaiting an email from Tina for a meeting to discuss this further. We will keep you posted on this!!!
  8. Booklist- The booklist is as follows:- One Day (26th October), The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (November), December Christmas Special (voting for the book in the November session) and possibly The Picture of Dorian Grey in January.
  9. October Session- For the 26th October, we will be meeting in Bookends at the University Library to discuss One Day by David Nicholls. As there has been a demand for it from members (even though we have discussed it). So get reading!!
And that's it! If you need anymore information then feel free to contact us on EHU_Bookclub@hotmail.co.uk or on Twitter under @EHU_Bookclub or find us on Facebook under ehu bookclub.

Hope to see you at our social event or on the 26th October for One Day

Official Announcement

Today, we have received word from one of the co-founders of the bookclub and currently person in charge Sarah about a sudden change. Here's an official statement from Sarah herself...

"Today, I have recieved word about a change in my academic career. Firstly, due to Edge Hill not informing when my degree classification would be finalised, I have sadly been informed that I have not been accepted onto my MA course this year. This is due to myself not having my degree classification finalised in order to be accepted onto the course, even though I was told in July to apply and I would be able to start the MA this month. Because of this mistake from Edge Hill, I have to apply for my MA again in order to start in September 2012.

However, this has left me with no choice but to inform the SU of this change. I have spoken to Tina in the SU and sadly, because I will be a current student at the University next year, I sadly have to try and find a replacement for the bookclub for a year until I'm back. This means that at the moment, me and Tina need to find someone who would be willing to take over from me for a year until I'm back in 2012. However, me and Tina have agreed that if we can find someone to replace me for a year, I will take on a role within the bookclub as an advisor to the replacement in order to help them run the bookclub effectively and help them and support them in every way possible. Also, I will be attending every single session that the bookclub will be doing this academic year and you won't get rid of me (lol).

I should also point out that me and Tina do not want the bookclub to lose everything that we've worked so far for in the last 7 months and we are both determined to work with each other and also the members of the bookclub in order to keep us going.

I hope this clarifies what's happening. Fresher's Fair on Wednesday will carry on as normal as Tina agrees that I should do what I want to set out to do which is to promote the club effectively and try to get as many new members as possible. After the Fresher's Fair, me and Tina will be meeting in order to try a solution and also find a replacement as quick as possible. Also, the Dorian Grey session will run as planned at 2pm on the 28th September.

I'm really sorry that this is happening.  I'm very upset and also angry with what's going on but I have tried everything to try and see if I could run the bookclub, but we also have to follow SU rules and proceedures. I didn't think within the 7 months I have been in charge of the bookclub, we would have gotten the SU backing. And I cannot thank you all enough for the support that you have for the bookclub by coming to each session and also promoting the bookclub to friends that you also know.

I really hope that I haven't let you all down but the situation the club is facing and also myself personally is something that is not beyond my control. I really hope we can find a replacement that can carry on the positivity, commitment and decidation to the bookclub like I hopefully have within the last 7 months.

I will keep you posted on what's happening every step of the way and I thank you again for all your support in this time. See you on Wednesday for the Fresher's Fair or on the 28th September for the Dorian Grey session.

Sarah"

Hi guys, hope your well. Firstly, thanks to all who turned up for the meeting! We hope it was useful to you.

Here's what happened at the meeting on the 7th September

  • Introductions- Every member introduced themselves
  • Facebook and Twitter news- Facebook seems to be slowing down a bit, Twitter has seen a rise. Which is great. Facebook will be looked at to see what can be improved.
  • SU News- Incase some members didn't know the club in July got approved by the SU! Which is great news. This is what we worked for for 4 months and thanks to everyone who helped us.
  • Fresher's Week- A very important issue. We decided that for the stand we would have sweets, cake, a leaflet, a suggestion box, a sign up sheet. We also discussed maybe a fancy dress idea. We also discussed if anyone can help us even for an hour or 2 at the fair. More news will be announced shortly.
  • Changing of Day of meeting and time:- Due to the SU rules, the club has to be avaliable to ALL students. We have decided to change the day to the last Wednesday of the month and the time will be 1pm. Location of our meetings stay the same at Bookends.
  • Changing of books on the list- Numbers 5 and 9 will be getting changed due to feedback from members. Will be discussed at next meeting.
  • Next Session- The next session will be the 28th September at 1pm. The book we are doing is The Picture of Dorian Grey- Oscar Wilde. Hope to see you there.
And that's about it. Hope to see you either at Fresher's Fair or on the 28th September. If you need anymore information on anything, then please email us at EHU_Bookclub@hotmail.co.uk, or tweet us at EHU_Bookclub or FB us under ehu bookclub.
