My Life in Books- Sarah Jones

‘My Life in Books’ Sarah Jones

These are the books that have impacted on my life from childhood to adulthood. Hope you enjoy reading this piece. Sarah x
Moby Dick- Herman Melville

Moby Dick was first published in 1851and is widely considered to be a ‘great’ American novel and a ‘treasure’ of World Literature. And it is hard not to see why. When I was younger, this was the first book that I read a chapter of each week. And I was captivated by the adventures of Ishamel, a wandering sailor on the Whaleship Pequoid whose sole purpose to seek out Moby Dick (a sperm white whale).
The reason why I love Moby Dick so much is that it opened my eyes to how Literature can transform you into another world, reaches out to you and takes you along for the ride. For example, when Ishamel and his team meet Moby Dick and for two days pursues the whale, causes widespread destruction and the disappearance of Fedallah. This scene in particular generated a mass of great excitement, goosebumps and had me hooked to what would happen next in the story.
What makes Moby Dick special is how Melville employs stylized language, symbolism and metaphor to explore Ishamel’s  personal, social, and spiritual journey through for example concepts of class and social status, good and evil and also his place in our Universe. To me, that is why Moby Dick is more than deserving of its accolade and praise within the literary world.

Bridget Jones's Diary- Helen Fielding

Bridget Jones’ Diary was first published in 1996 and was evolved from Fielding’s columns on Bridget Jones in the The Independent and The Daily Telegraph newspapers. It is also now a best-selling film that was first released in 2001. It is often known by people and critics as the first ‘chick lit’ novel and also the ‘chick lit’ genre. When I was reading the novel in my early teenage years, I was hooked by the simple layout and narrative that Fielding constructs (using the personal diary format) that tracks a year in Bridget’s life as a thirty- something single woman working and living in London.
The reason why I adore Bridget Jones’ Diary so much is that you can relate to the character of Bridget and her problems so much. The main focus of the novel is surrounding Bridget’s love life and her ambition to find her ‘knight in shining armour’, while also dealing with problems surrounding her friends and her parent’s relationship. Over the course of the novel, Fielding uses the plot of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice to show how Bridget towards the end of the novel finds her ‘happy ending’ with Mark Darcy. For example, when Bridget is asked by family and friends “How is your love life?” and also how she gets involved in a ‘doomed’ relationship with Daniel Cleaver.
Bridget Jones’ Diary takes the readers on a adventure that has ups and downs (just like our lives in general) that will make you laugh and giggle, makes you smile and also cry along with Bridget but also support her through her problems. But this book has sparked off an interest within myself into how society within the 1990’s had an obsession with women’s magazine such as Cosmopolitan and also criticised wider societal trends in Britain at that time.

About a Boy- Nick Hornby

About a Boy was first published in 1998 and has been made into a best-selling film starring Hugh Grant in 2002. After finishing reading Bridget Jones’ Diary, I was suggested to read Hornby’s novel by my English teacher at the time which I believe is Hornby’s answer to Fielding’s novel. As with Hornby’s previous novel, the brilliant and sharp High Fidelity, Hornby uses the confessional novel format to track the lives and problems with his two protagonist characters Will Freeman and Marcus Brewer in 1993 and 1994 in London.
What I find so enduring about the novel, is Hornby’s ability to pinpoint and describe accurately the problems Will and Marcus find themselves in, yet also provide them both with a sense of hope and encouragement through their friendship with each other. For example, throughout the novel we find that Will seems to be having problems maintaining a relationship with women (in one case making up a two year child called Ned to meet single women after a relationship with Angie) but also Marcus is having problems with bullying while being at school. The friendship that Will and Marcus share instantly got me hooked to the novel further and also wanting to see if they could overcome their problems together and individually.
About a Boy for me highlights and explores just how important friendship can be in terms of providing general and emotional support to each other. I would also say that from studying the novel at University in my second year has reinforced my interest (just like Bridget Jones) into how society was changing during the 1990’s (families not staying together anymore) but also what it means to be a ‘man’ socially and how masculinity is presented within this period.

His N Hers- Mike Gayle

His N Hers was first published in 2005 and is one of Gayle’s best loved books (according to Amazon). I was introduced to Mike Gayle through two mutual friends who really enjoyed reading him and highly praised this book in particular. After much persuasion, I decided to read it. And thank god that I did. As yes, Gayle may well be using the male confessional novel format just like Hornby (who I love) but he pushes the boundaries of the genre even further.
The reason why I love His N Hers is that Gayle breaks the reader’s expectations by introducing the characters of Jim and Alison through the death of their cat ‘Disco’ and then explores the ‘beginning’, ‘middle’  and ‘end’ of  their relationship breaking down. Gayle achieves this by allowing both Jim and Alison to comment separately which has not been used before within the genre and provides an extra viewpoint that the readers may not expect.
Throughout the novel, through a series of weird, funny and unusual situations, we track the relationship of Jim and Alison that at times left me giggling, angry and frustrated. For example, when Alison finds out that ‘Disco’ is sadly dying and phones Jim to let him know what is happening as she knows ‘Disco’ means a lot to the both of them. I found this scene incredibly heart-warming and also touching that they can both put their differences aside.
His N Hers for me showcases Gayle’s ability to portray and analyse people, relationships and their feelings in an honest, thought-provoking way. Gayle is an astonishing writer who can understand human emotion and feelings and translate it into his novel that is easy to understand and relate to. Gayle really is one of my favourite writers (hence why I wrote my Dissertation on him!)  and seems to be pushing the boundaries of the male confessional novel to new and higher places that interests me personally and academically.

Yes Man- Danny Wallace

Yes Man was first published in 2006 and has become a best-selling film in 2008 starring Jim Carrey. After reading Danny’s book Friends Like These, I decided to invest in Danny’s back catalogue as I loved Friends Like These so much. And this book didn’t disappoint.
I was instantly gripped with the title on the novel ‘One Little Word can change your life’ and set to work reading it. I absolutely love Danny’s direct, honest and yet gripping style of writing that sucks you into the world he has found himself in after meeting a man on a bus who proclaims that he needs to say ‘yes’ more following the breakup of his relationship to his ex girlfriend Hanne.
For example, Danny throughout the novel encounters barriers such as saying ‘yes’ to a double glazing sales company on the phone, even though he already has it, saying ‘yes’ to pamphleteers on the street, credit cards and solicitations on the Internet which make you laugh at loud, be it in the comfort of your house or on the train or in public. However, Danny from saying ‘yes’ seems to further the options on his career and also finds love by meeting Lizzie which makes you cheer him on, yet feel pleased that his challenge is actually working out for him too.
Yes Man came along at a time when I needed a boost personally and has changed my perspective on life. I have also managed to say ‘yes’ to some opportunities that have presented itself onto me. However, Danny Wallace has rapidly become of my favourite authors of all time. Danny has an amazing talent to communicate, analyse and explore different aspects of life that we can all relate to and become a well-respected author, broadcaster and radio presenter (he’s on XFM every Monday to Friday morning!). Apart from that, Danny is an inspiration to me personally and I feel honoured to have met him this June at his book signing and also feel more honoured and humbled to have the opportunity to do my MA dissertation on him over the next two years.

Official Announcement

Today, we have received word from one of the co-founders of the bookclub and currently person in charge Sarah about a sudden change. Here's an official statement from Sarah herself...

"Today, I have recieved word about a change in my academic career. Firstly, due to Edge Hill not informing when my degree classification would be finalised, I have sadly been informed that I have not been accepted onto my MA course this year. This is due to myself not having my degree classification finalised in order to be accepted onto the course, even though I was told in July to apply and I would be able to start the MA this month. Because of this mistake from Edge Hill, I have to apply for my MA again in order to start in September 2012.

However, this has left me with no choice but to inform the SU of this change. I have spoken to Tina in the SU and sadly, because I will be a current student at the University next year, I sadly have to try and find a replacement for the bookclub for a year until I'm back. This means that at the moment, me and Tina need to find someone who would be willing to take over from me for a year until I'm back in 2012. However, me and Tina have agreed that if we can find someone to replace me for a year, I will take on a role within the bookclub as an advisor to the replacement in order to help them run the bookclub effectively and help them and support them in every way possible. Also, I will be attending every single session that the bookclub will be doing this academic year and you won't get rid of me (lol).

I should also point out that me and Tina do not want the bookclub to lose everything that we've worked so far for in the last 7 months and we are both determined to work with each other and also the members of the bookclub in order to keep us going.

I hope this clarifies what's happening. Fresher's Fair on Wednesday will carry on as normal as Tina agrees that I should do what I want to set out to do which is to promote the club effectively and try to get as many new members as possible. After the Fresher's Fair, me and Tina will be meeting in order to try a solution and also find a replacement as quick as possible. Also, the Dorian Grey session will run as planned at 2pm on the 28th September.

I'm really sorry that this is happening.  I'm very upset and also angry with what's going on but I have tried everything to try and see if I could run the bookclub, but we also have to follow SU rules and proceedures. I didn't think within the 7 months I have been in charge of the bookclub, we would have gotten the SU backing. And I cannot thank you all enough for the support that you have for the bookclub by coming to each session and also promoting the bookclub to friends that you also know.

I really hope that I haven't let you all down but the situation the club is facing and also myself personally is something that is not beyond my control. I really hope we can find a replacement that can carry on the positivity, commitment and decidation to the bookclub like I hopefully have within the last 7 months.

I will keep you posted on what's happening every step of the way and I thank you again for all your support in this time. See you on Wednesday for the Fresher's Fair or on the 28th September for the Dorian Grey session.

Sarah"

However, we are looking at maybe creating a forum/chatroom for all members to meet and communicate with each other but also when meetings are taking place, have the opportunity to not miss anything when the meeting is taking place. We are also looking into Skype also. But when we have our meeting about admin and Fresher's Week this will be discussed with ALL members.
  • Book changes- Over the next week, we will actively asking all members on Twitter and Facebook which book they would like to see Adele Parks replaced with. We have posted a poll on our Facebook page and also on our blog as well. The choices are The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and finally the Orange Prize winner The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht. Please make sure you vote by 5pm on  Friday the 27th July. We will collect votes from the Facebook poll and our blog poll and announce the winner that evening. Get voting!!!!!
  • Email Newsletter- Let us know if you want to be on the list!
  • Brighton Rock Session- We have posted an event page on Facebook this week informing all members that the session on Brighton Rock will be on the 3rd August starting at 1:30pm and finishing at 3pm, meeting at Bookends as usual. However, we have also suggested that if you don't fancy doing Brighton Rock this month, then picking a book from our booklist instead. For the second option, you have until the end of next week to decide, so PLEASE let us know!
And that's about it. If you need any information, then please email us at EHU_Bookclub@hotmail.co.uk or tweet us under EHU_Bookclub or find us on Facebook under: ehu_bookclub

'Twenty Years, Two People, One Day'- One Day Session

Last week, EHU_Bookclub discussed one of the best reads of last year and debatably one of this year too One Day by David Nicholls. The film of the book is out this year and also with the book winning an Galaxy Book Award last year, this book needed to be discussed! Without further waffling, from the discussion materials kindly provided to us by Sarah, we will now discuss or findings from the book.

1. The title 'One Day', your first thoughts? Our first thoughts was that the book would be based around this 'day', even though we did not know what that day would be. But however, it did seem to draw us in, if that was Nicholl's intention is debatable.

2. From the review by John O'Connell, do you find similarities with Nick Hornby? You can see similarities especially into how Dexter is portrayed in the book. Especially as the media and representations of masculinity within this period are in 'crisis' within this period. However, you do get insights into Dexter's personal thoughts such as in letters with Emma that he writes when he is drunk.

3. Do you think Dexter and Emma would have been happy had they admitted their love and devotion to each other much earlier in their lives? Is their love a product of their long, off and on relationship through the years, or could it have been realised even if they got together earlier? Do you know people have had a similar relationship? Firstly, we don't think they would have been happier if they admitted earlier. As both were young at the time and wanted different experiences from their lives such as Dexter wanting to travel the world. Their love could be based on their off and on relationship, as with other relationships in their lives could contribute to them wanting to be with each other. The relationship wouldn't have worked as Dexter need to 'sow his wild oats' before settling down with Emma later on in the book.

4. Why do you think Dexter came so close to telling Emma his true feelings (for example in the candid letter to her that he stuck in a book and promptly forgot) but then decided against it? Maybe Dexter realised that maybe Emma is what he wanted after all and that he needed to do something about it. However, he has had opportunities to try and get with Emma in the novel, but decided to pursue other women. And maybe Dexter decided against it, as Emma was in another relationship at the time and Emma would maybe think he was jealous.. Also you could say that Dexter was scared to let his true feelings come out incase Emma rejected him. Also, we felt disappointed when reading sections that they both had the opportunity to say how they felt (eg. at the wedding when Dexter announces to her he's marrying and expecting a child with Suzie) and you was egging them to just make the step!

5. Do you know people who make the wrong choices repeatedly and almost seem determined to be unhappy? Do you think this is a good description of Emma? Dexter? Neither? Of course, everyone knows people who make the wrong choices all the time, but it does make you stronger. In the case of Emma, she does seem to have the wrong choices (eg. not going travelling with  Dexter and staying with Ian in a relationship) but however, she is more receptive in how she deals with these bad choices. Even though you could argue later on with Ian, she may not have been.

6. Did Emma's sudden accident and death take you by surprise? If not, how did you see it coming? All members agreed that Emma's accident was a surprise. It was totally unexpected and ended up crying reading the death. Also, Ian's letter to Dexter on the anniversary of Emma's death was also unexpected and was really emotional, moving and mature and a great device to the novel.

7. Did Emma ever really love Ian or was she trying to, hoping to? How did you feel when their relationship ended? We think it was a bit of both. As Emma thought she may have loved Ian in the beginning as he was offering an alternative to what she may have had with Dexter. However, due to her feelings for Dexter at the back of everything, we believe that she did not love him as much as he loved her. This was proven when she ended up having a brief affair with the headmaster of the school she was working at. Also, we was not shocked that the relationship ended as it was always lurking and also we did feel sorry for Ian as he did really love her.

8. Do you have a favourite character? A least favourite? Favourite character Emma. Least favourite Suzie and sometimes Dexter.

9. The 'When Harry Met Sally' question: what do you think- a single man and a single women ever truly be 'just friends', or does one of them always want more? We decided that some people can have a friendship with a boy and this may lead to something more in the future or it can just be a friendship.

10. Rate One Day by David Nicholls on a scale of 1 to 5. 3.5/4

We hope this is a great catchup for people progressing the Bookclub or members just wanting to catch up on what they have missed.
Until the next session,
EHU_Bookclub

Ickle Update...

Just an ickle update for you all. Firstly, as you know 'One Day' session on Friday had to be cancelled due to Sarah's goddaughter being ill. But we want to run this session as soon as possible as Sarah's got everything ready for the session! The dates have been on our FB and Twitter page and here's the selection you have to choose from:- 27th May, 30th May, 3rd June, 6th June and the 10th June. We hope to settle this rescheduling soon!

Also, within the rescheduled session, we need to discuss summer arrangements, people signing up for email updates on the Bookclub, our posters that WILL be posted around shortly and also Fresher's Week... which leads me onto the subject...

Fresher's Week. We do have an session with the English department at the end of the month regarding how they can help us advertise within Fresher's Week and also throughout the academic year. Which is great. However, we have not received any word from the SU to see if they can include us in Fresher Week's packs etc. And we would like to hold a meeting, event or even a chat on FB or Twitter to try and organise an event in Fresher's Week with ALL members to promote the club? If you have ANY suggestions, big or small, then please email, FB or Tweet us.

Well, that's about it. For now. Hope the rescheduled date for 'One Day' happens soon. If you need any more information about us, then please feel free to email us at EHU_Bookclub@hotmail.co.uk or tweet us under:- EHU_Bookclub on Twitter or find us on Facebook at:- ehu_bookclub.

A much needed update

So much as gone on with the club, we feel that we need to update you!

Firstly, we are sad to say that one of the leading founders of the Bookclub is off to pasters new to New Zealand to finish off the final year of her undergraduate degree. But she has left the following statement:-

'I would like to officially announce that I have been offered the opportunity to complete the third year of my degree in New Zealand. I'm very shocked yet happy that this has happened.
But this sadly leaves me to announce that I will be stepping down organising the club in order to take this opportunity. But do not fear! The Bookclub will still continue under the hands of an amazing co-founder who I believe will continue to make progression and progress with the bookclub. And she will do an amazing job.
I would like to thank every single person who has helped or has been involved with setting up the Bookclub and getting it into the position it is now. We've proven to people that there is a need for it and we will continue in every way we can to keep the Bookclub.'

Many thanks Emz x'

I'm sure on behalf of everyone who is involved at EHU_Bookclub would like to wish Emz the best of the luck with the degree and hopes it'll be a successful year.
